There’s still plenty of time to catch up on Vinland Saga Season 1 before Season 2 comes out and now it’s going to be even easier!
Earlier this week at Anime Expo, it was announced that HIDIVE will begin streaming the first season of the series on Thursday, July 7, 2022. It’s been confirmed that Netflix will begin streaming the series on July 7th, as well.
Originally Vinland Saga Season 1 was only available to stream in the United States via Amazon Prime’s streaming platform. The expensive price tag made it hard for some viewers to gain access. With HIDIVE and Netflix both streaming the series, it will hopefully open it up to a lot more viewers.
What is Vinland Saga about?
If you’re unfamiliar with the series, you’re surely wondering what it’s about.
Originally produced by WIT studio, Vinland Saga tells the tale of Thorfinn, a young Viking boy following in the footsteps of his Viking father while seeking revenge for his untimely death.
He’s young and inexperienced at first, but his journey is filled with a great many battles that help to hone his fighting skills along the way.
For years Thorfinn follows and trains under a Viking named Askeladd, but the very person that is training him, is the same Viking Thorfinn will have to kill to achieve his vengeance later.
The story is just as epic as it sounds. Fans of Vikings, period pieces, or just plain action will surely enjoy this series.
Will I be able to watch the series dubbed?
If you’re a dub fan, or just want to watch the series without subtitles, this is where things get interesting.
Amazon Prime only has the subtitled version available on their platform. Despite owning the streaming rights for several years, they never chose to dub the series.
However, both Netflix and Sentai Filmworks did, and they did so separately. If you’re thinking this means there are two completely different dubs out there for season one, you would be correct.
Netflix dubbed the series in English, but that version was never released on the American side of the platform, as they did not have the streaming rights for this region. Their dub will not be available come July 7th.
While the Netflix dub is available in Japan, there is no word official date for when it will be released in the US yet.
Dub fans still have hope though! Sentai Filmworks also dubbed the series for their home video release and it was exclusive to the hard copies until now. According to this tweet, the Sentai Filmworks dub will be available on the HIDIVE streaming platform come July 7th, along with the original Japanese sub.
As for which dub you should watch, that’s up for debate. Fans seem to be torn on which dub they prefer, as both companies cast different actors and seemed to put their own creative spins on things like ADR scripts and accents! Check out this comparison for yourself and decide!
Will there be a Vinland Saga Season 2?
The short answer is yes, there will be a Vinland Saga Season 2.
It was announced earlier this year, along with a studio change from Wit to MAPPA. Fans can expect the second season to premiere sometime during the Winter 2023 anime season.
