A new PV has recently been released for the Summer 2022 anime Isekai Ojisan. Also known as Uncle from Another World, Isekai Ojisan, is the tale of a middle-aged man who wakes up after close to two decades in a coma. Unlike other isekai tales, however, this comedy series focuses on the return to the real world and all the antics that ensue.
Newcomer studio (known for their previous work on the Ganbare Doki-chan ONA) Atelier Pontdarc will be animating the series. It’s director Shigeki Kawai’s first lead directorial role as well. Although, he’s worked his way up in the industry — serving as episode and animation director on Naruto Shippuden as an animator on several Bleach films.
Who will be part of Isekai Ojisan’s voice cast?
The series’ voice cast is packed with big names that fans will recognize instantly including Takehito Koyasu — known for his role as JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’s Dio — as Ojisan. And he’s not the only instantly recognizable voice. Known as Code Geass’ Lelouch, Jun Fukuyama will voice nephew Takafumi.
Fans will also recognize the voice of the mysterious elf who helps Ojisan as Haruka Tomatsu (Sword Art Online’s Asuna). She’s not the only one. It’s not voice actress Aoi Yuuki’s first time in an isekai — previously starring as Tanya Degurechaff in Youjo Senki. The entire cast list can be found below:
- Takehito Koyasu as Ojisan
- Jun Fukuyama as Takafumi
- Haruka Tomatsu as Elf
- Aoi Yuuki as Mabel
- Aki Toyosaki as Alicia
- Mikako Komatsu as Fujimiya
What is the premise of the Isekai Ojisan anime?
After 17 years trapped in an isekai world, a middle-aged man known simply as Ojisan returns to Earth only to find himself confined to a hospital bed. Close to a decade has passed, and in that time, his family has fractured. The only one who comes to greet him is his nephew Takafumi.
But even with a gift of magic and knowledge of a world beyond, Ojisan is far more intrigued about all he left behind. It’s not his family and friends he’s most worried about but namely how his favorite video game companies have fared after years of progress. After having learned the decline of once-gaming-giant Sega, he’s convinced that the fate of Earth is just as cruel as what he had been forced to endure in the isekai world.
Compared to the elves and nobles that made up the world beyond, Ojisan’s homely looks made him stand out — and not in a good way. He confides in Takafumi that he was branded an orc and ostracized. His only saving grace was a mysterious tsundere woman who came to aid… but not before admonishing him for his face.
Does Ojisan wish to reconnect with his family or the woman who helped him survive in the world beyond? Not exactly. In this gag series, Ojisan — with the help of his nephew — acquaints himself with an evolved world full of new technology and customs. Sometimes it’s the little things like hate comments on his recently released videos or expensive shipping on new tech items. Ojisan may have returned to a world more mundane than where he’s spent over a decade, but with his magical prowess and mind full of stories from an isekai world, he makes what’s normal fantastical.
