What would you do if you were given allowed to stay at a shrine for free? What if you had to choose one of the shrine maidens to marry?! Pic credit: Marcey Naito

On September 15, 2022, @amagamisan_wm on Twitter posted a new PV for the Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister manga. Marcey Naito is the creator of this fun romp, and it reminds me of Rama 1/2 by Rumiko Takahashi.

Instead of inheriting a Mixed Martial Arts dojo, the main character, Uryu, is asked to choose one of the shrine maidens to marry. But the manga is more than a harem rom-com.

It’s about how Uryu is an atheist and a pessimist and his growth with the Amagami sisters. Then, of course, there’s also the fact that Uryu is in love with his foster mother, but we’ll get to that.

What is Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister?

Uryu has lived a hard life, but he’s working hard on his future. He’s studying to get into Kyoto’s University medical school to become a doctor.

But first, he has to move in with his new foster family. Who happens to run a shrine, and he’s an atheist.

He finds the shrine, but when no one greets him at the door, he heads inside and finds the Amagami sisters. In various states of undress.

To his credit, Uryu shuts the door and apologizes right away, but the girls are quick to finish dressing. In their Miko or shrine maiden outfits.

What follows is what you’d expect, but the girl’s grandfather, Uryu’s new foster father, isn’t at the shrine. So, of course, this means Uryu has to try not to make things worse, but that’s easier said than done.

You can’t have a harem rom-com without misunderstandings, just as Uryu is starting to fit in with the Amagami sisters. But then, Grandpa comes in with a bombshell; he wants Uryu to choose one of his granddaughters to marry and take over the shrine.

Fortunately, all three are close to him in age. Yae is 20, Yuna is 17, the same as Uryu, and Asahi is 14. Unfortunately, Uryu has no interest in running a shrine, and he’s in love with his previous foster mother.

Did I mention the shrine has money problems and might be taken away from the Amagami family?

What sets it apart?

Marcey Naito was an assistant for Negi Haruba, the creator of The Quintessional Quintuplets. And that may have inspired the idea of Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister.

Flashforwards hint at which sister Uryu marries, and the usual hijinks ensue. Sadly, there’s no sign of an anime adaptation, but the PV is top-notch!

The manga is up to 6 volumes in Japan, and English readers are at 4. The voice actors in the PV are:

  • Ai Kayano as Yae
  • Sora Amamiya as Yuna
  • Ayane Sakura as Asahi

You can also check out a comic on Weekly Shonen Jump Magazine’s YouTube channel! Sanosuke Hattori is Uryu, Chidori the grandfather, and Miyu Tsuji plays the sisters.
