The Legend of the Galactic Heroes Marks 40th Anniversary
All this activity is commemorating the 40th anniversary of the publication of The Legend of the Galactic Heroes. In Japan, all 15 volumes are being sold at a 40% discount price and some other notable activities are also underway.
E.g., on May 12 it was announced that The Galactic Heroes Brunhild 1/8000 Scale Plastic Model Kit from HMA Co., Ltd will go on sale in September 2022.
In anticipation of the actual anniversary, Tops Co., Ltd. released Reinhard von Lohengramm Bust in July 2021.
The hype is well-deserved since the novels have maintained popularity for four decades.
The Legend of the Galactic Heroes Timeline
Based on the novels by acclaimed Japanese SF writer Yoshiki Tanaka, The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These is developed by studio Production I.G. (Ghost in the Shell). The anime is directed by Shunsuke Tada (Kuroko no Basuke), with Yoko Kikuchi, Iwao Teraoka, and Katsura Tsushima being in charge of character design.
Ginga Eiyū Densetsu is the sixth animated adaptation of Tanaka’s masterpieces. A 12-episode series aired in 2018 followed by 3 animated films in 2019 and 3 animated films in 2022. The first 24 episodes of the latest adaptation aired on NHK Educational in April 2020, as a single series.
In addition, The Legend of the Galactic Heroes has also been adapted into the 110-episode OVA series, three OVA films, a prequel Gaiden OVA series, and one musical stage production.
Funimation is streaming the series with an English dub and Crunchyroll — with subtitles. Space opera fans, rejoice!
