What is Muv-Luv Alternative about?
Muv-Luv Alternative is an adaptation of the eponymous romance visual novel, which, in itself, is only one installment of a far bigger series. Up to date, five titles of the series have been released outside of Japan, namely:
- Muv-Luv Extra and Muv-Luv Unlimited
- Muv-Luv Alternative
- Muv-Luv Photonflowers
- Muv-Luv Photonmelodies
- Muv-Luv Unlimited: The Day After
The Muv-Luv Alternative visual novel (2006) is a sequel to Muv-Luv Extra (2003) and Muv-Luv Unlimited (2003) and is set in an alternate Earth in which mankind is facing extinction by BETA, a superior alien race. Humanity is using humanoid fighting machines known as Tactical Surface Fighters.
Both Muv-Luv Extra and Muv-Luv Unlimited were released on Steam, the first in 2016, and the second in 2017. The games are considered to be one of the best visual novels to date.
The Muv-Luv games follow Takeru Shirogane (the playable character of the series), who one day wakes up to find a woman sleeping in his bed. As it turns out, the lady is Meiya Mitsurugi, the heiress of a powerful family, who is determined to marry Takeru. Things are not that easy, however, because Takeru’s childhood friend Sumika Kagami has similar intentions.
Being a romance visual novel, Muv-Luv also parades other potential love interests, but the routes are set against the backdrop of impending doom, as explained above. While there are arguably better romance visual novels out there, the Muv-Luv series comes with an SF twist. Namely, one day, Takeru wakes up to discover his hometown of Yokohama in ruins with a mysterious mecha collapsed on Sumika’s house. Trying to discover more about what happened, he soon discovers he somehow managed to end up in another world where mankind is fighting BETAs.
The Muv-Luv games are developed by âge. The trilogy (Muv-Luv Extra, Muv-Luv Unlimited, and Muv-Luv Alternative) starts as a romance story (Extra), resumes as an alternate Earth story (Unlimited), and finally becomes a war epic (Alternative).
