The Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation “sequel” is not actually a real sequel according to light novel writer Rifujin na Magonote. Instead, the new story will be based in the Six-Sided Universe 80 years after the story events focused on Rudeus Greyrat and his family. Lara Greyrat will be involved somehow, but the author hasn’t even come up with a title for the new series yet.
On Twitter, Maganote explained that he’s “talking about 80 years after the [events of] Jobless Reincarnation” and that he doesn’t “really intend to write it as a ‘sequel to Jobless Reincarnation’.”
While Magonote has been clear that he doesn’t intend on writing a Mushoku Tensei sequel, fans of the light novel began calling it a sequel, anyway. On September 16, 2022, he clarified his previous comments.
“It’s a work that people say is a sequel to Jobless Reincarnation, and since I haven’t decided on a title, I can’t help but think that’s what people will say. However, I don’t intend to write a sequel to Jobless Reincarnation,” Magonote tweeted. “I am sure that people will say, ‘I expected a sequel, but I got something completely different!’ So I keep denying the word sequel.”
When one fan flat-out stated that they want a sequel, Maganote responded, “Of course, I know that a lot of readers think so, and I also know that commercially it would be more successful if I wrote it as a sequel and published it as a sequel. But that’s not what I want to write, so I won’t.”
Maganote also says that the new series should not be considered a Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation spin-off.
New Six-Sided Universe light novel series’ release date is many years away
The Mushoku Tensei Volume 26 release date was set for November 25, 2022. It’s confirmed by Kadokawa to contain the final ending of the light novel series, which is adapting the Mushoku Tensei web novel series that was self-published on Shosetsuka ni Naro (Let’s Become a Novelist) from November 2012 through April 2015.
On January 15, 2021, Magonote wrote about his plans for the future of the Six-Sided Universe series. While the web novel’s ending foreshadowed a new book series years ago, Magonote’s progress has been held up by health problems.
The prolific writer has also been busy working on unrelated projects. Since January 2019 he’s been working on the Orc Hero Story web novel, which is officially titled Orc Eroica by Yen Press.
Maganote plans on finishing Orc Hero Story, and then he’ll focus on healing his shoulders, neck, and eyes. Only once that checklist is completed will he turn his attention to writing the new Six-Sided Universe book series.
On September 16, 2022, Maganote clarified that he only intends on starting work on the new Six-Sided Universe project “after the anime and the orcs are done. It depends on how long the anime lasts, so maybe 3-8 years later.”
It’s interesting how Maganote phrased that. The Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 release date is officially confirmed for 2023. However, anime news leakers have claimed that Mushoku Tensei Season 3 has already been secretly greenlit for production, so by saying the anime could end in 3 to 8 years he may have accidentally indirectly confirmed that Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 3 is already in the pre-production stage.
Lara Greyrat confirmed to be in the next series
In response to other fans, Maganote explained that the Greyrat family and the characters whose names appear in Mushoku Tensei will not be the main characters in the new story. These new characters will not be related to Rudeus, which is why the author feels it’s not a direct continuation.
Although Maganote hasn’t started writing the story, he acknowledged that fans want to read more about Lara Greyrat (she’s the blue-haired teenage girl sitting below Roxy Greyrat in the family photo). The creator did admit that Lara will appear in the story somehow, but he didn’t confirm that she would be the main protagonist.
Lara is the second child of Rudeus and the first child born to Roxy. In the original Mushoku Tensei light novels, it was prophesized that she would become a savior to the Doldia Tribe, but this plot thread was left hanging by the light novels which is why it’ll need to be resolved in the Six-Sided Universe “sequel”.
On that note, it’s also likely that Hitogami or Man-God will make an appearance in the new story. After all, it was prophesized that Rudeus’ children will eventually kill him and that particular plot thread is also unresolved.
Rudeus’ name from his previous life will remain a mystery
Another unresolved issue from the original light novel series was actually Rudeus’ name in his previous life. Although readers (and anime fans) learned a lot about the previous Rudeus, Maganote never gave us his original name.
Well, it turns out that Maganote made up his mind to never tell the world! In fact, he went so far as to say that asking him about Rudeus’ name is “tactless” or “tasteless”.
We’ll just have to wait until the new Six-Sided Universe book series come out to learn more. Stay tuned!
