Game publisher CFK recently dropped a trailer announcing that Frontier Aja’s Koumajou Remilia II: Stranger’s Requiem will come out soon. It will make its way onto the Nintendo Switch and Steam — but there’s no confirmation of a release date yet.
However, the publisher has confirmed that the game will have English, French, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language options.
Koumajou Remilia II: Stranger’s Requiem is a sequel to Koumajou Remilia: Scarlet Symphony, currently available on the Nintendo Switch and Steam. Both are fan-made Touhou games based on the popular doujin bullet hell series designed by ZUN. That’s why many refer to both as ‘Touhouvanias’ since they borrow from Touhou and Koji Igarashi’s Castlevania series.
However, both are remastered versions of the Windows-only games released at Japan’s doujinshi convention — Comiket. Frontier Aja released Koumajou Densetsu: Scarlet Symphony (Scarlet Devil Castle Legend) in August 2009.
The video game developer later released the full version of Koumajou Densetsu II: Stranger’s Requiem (Legend of Scarlet Devil Castle II: Stranger’s Requiem) at Comiket 79 on December 30, 2010.
With the recent onslaught of older titles, such as Cannon Dancer and River City Girls Zero — gamers that missed out on these titles finally have an opportunity to play them on modern platforms.
And while Frontier Aja’s games aren’t that old, only hardcore doujin and Touhou fans were exposed to the series. However, those eager for some more Koumajou Remilia goodness can visit the Happinet booth at the Tokyo Game Show 2022, held from September 15 to 18.

The phenomenal cover art of the Koumajou Densetsu series
As a doujin developer, Frontier Aja released physical copies of their Koumajou Densetsu games. These supported Windows XP/Vista PCs with the following configurations: Intel Pentium 4 Processor 3.0GHz or higher/Intel R Core 2 Duo processor, 512MB/1 GB RAM, 64 MB VRAM, DirectX 9.0c, DirectSound compatible sound card, and a resolution of 800 x 600 or higher display.
Below is the cover art of Koumajou Densetsu I & II Premium Pack, which Frontier Aja no longer sells in physical form. However, it’s possible to purchase a downloadable version directly from the developer’s website at a cost of 2,800 yen (approximately US$17).
The upcoming remastered release of Koumajou Remilia II: Stranger’s Requiem should have artwork that matches Frontier Aja’s original cover art. Just expect the inclusion of the obligatory Nintendo Switch and Steam logos.
Koumajou Remilia II: Stranger’s Requiem should appeal to gamers who enjoy Metroidvanias and all things gothic and even those drawn to more niche titles such as GrimGrimoire OnceMore and Fate/EXTRA Record.
Time will tell if Frontier Aja’s doujin series has what it takes to appeal to a bigger audience. Stay tuned!
