A KonoSuba movie has officially been confirmed to be in production starting in 2018! The new anime film is listed on the official website as being based on the Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku o! (KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World!) light novel series.
What’s surprising about the announcement is that there will be a new animation studio taking over from Studio DEEN, who handled the first two seasons of the anime adaptation.
According to the official website, studio J.C. Staff will be handling the KonoSuba movie production but they’re keeping some of the key staff members. Fans will probably be happy to hear that the KonoSuba movie is keeping director Takaomi Kanasaki on board, which is good since he directed the first two seasons. Also returning is character designer Koichi Kikuta, series composition writer Makoto Uezu, and music composer Masato Koda.
The main KonoSuba cast is also returning:
- Jun Fukushima as Kazuma
- Sora Amamiya as Aqua
- Rie Takahashi as Megumin
- Ai Kayano as Darkness
- Yui Horie as Wiz
- And Aki Toyosaki as Yunyun
A plot synopsis for the new KonoSuba movie has not been listed yet. However, it seems likely it’ll be an original story related to the timeline set by light novel author Natsume Akatsuki. The reason is that the anime TV series left audiences at a point in time where continuing the main story with a film would not make much sense.
The second season finished up events from Volume 4. While Volumes 5 and 6 would showcase Megumin’s family, those books are probably not quite explosive enough for a feature film. Most likely that story will be reserved for KonoSuba Season 3 (this is just my opinion). The only other option would be to adapt one of the several spin-off series, which means the Bakuen light novel series would be the best pick since it tells Megumin’s backstory.
The KonoSuba movie release date was not listed in the announcement, although it’s unlikely to be in 2018 since J.C. Staff is working on three big projects already, including One Punch Man Season 2, A Certain Magical Index Season 3, and Han-Gyaku-Sei Million Arthur. It’s also possible (but unconfirmed) that they’ll be producing Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma Season 4 in 2019. Let’s just hope anime fans don’t have to wait until 2020. Stay tuned!
