This past Sunday, Kevin Smith made a special surprise appearance at the annual He-Man and the Masters of the Universe convention Power-Con to drop a piece of very special news. Smith is bringing back the He-Man animated series to Netflix and it’s going to be an anime.
The new series is entitled Masters of the Universe: Revelation and will be a direct continuation of the classic cartoon from the ’80s in which He-Man will once more take on the forces of evil. Smith is a part of this project as the showrunner and executive producer and fans are totally digging this.

We were right there in the thick of things and fans were excited to see the return of the muscle-bound champion of Castle Grayskull, along with Smith’s involvement with the iconic IP. While Smith walked the convention, floor chatting with fans and signing autographs, there were a number of questions buzzing about. What will the new story be like? Will it tie into Netflix’s other popular series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power?
“I’m Eternia-ly grateful to Mattel TV and Netflix for entrusting me with not only the secrets of Grayskull, but also their entire Universe,” Kevin Smith said in a statement. “In Revelation, we pick up right where the classic era left off to tell an epic tale of what may be the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor! Brought to life with the most metal character designs Powerhouse Animation can contain in the frame, this is the Masters of the Universe story you always wanted to see as a kid!”
Mattel Television will be producing the new anime series along with executive producer and vice president of Mattel TV, Rob David (he’s also the author of He-Man: the Eternity War). Writers on the project include Eric Carrasco, Tim Sheridan, Diya Mishra, and Marc Bernardin. Powerhouse Animation will be overseeing the animation of the series.
“Masters of the Universe has been a cultural phenomenon for generations, inspiring fans to discover their own power within,” a statement from Rob David reads. “Fans of this franchise have been waiting for the continuation of these characters, and Kevin Smith, as a ‘Masters’ superfan himself, is the perfect champion and partner to expand the canon through a dynamic animated series on Netflix.”
Many fans are excited for the return of the classic He-Man as he takes on the forces of Skeletor once again in anime form.
