Like many fans, I was torn after watching Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan. Broly was everything we wanted in a villain and more!
If only the movie had given us more to work with than that pathetic backstory! There will be spoilers for the eighth Dragon Ball Z movie.
This article has nothing to do with the Dragon Ball Super Broly movie. Nor will it touch on the sequels in the Dragon Ball Z universe.
The Alpha Saiyan!
One of the benefits of having YouTube is that you can find many videos on the Dragon Ball franchise. You have the power scalers, lore divers, and ultimate fans to help you learn.
And that’s one of the reasons I can write this article. Broly was never meant to be a meme. He was the Devil Saiyan or Legendary Super Saiyan!
He scared Vegeta just by transforming! If Vegeta is the embodiment of Saiyan Pride. Broly is the ultimate pride-breaker.
Everything about Broly is meant to turn your expectations around. He’s huge and still fast enough to catch up to his prey in a second.
And I do mean “prey.” Because from Broly’s perspective, none of the Z Fighters present is a worthy opponent.
He doesn’t see Goku as a threat except at the end of the fight.
The truth behind the crying
How can someone so cool have a lame backstory? Why did the powers that be choose a crying Goku as an infant to be Broly’s trigger?
Well, I’m pleased to say that wasn’t the real reason for that scene. Crying babies don’t trigger Broly.
Goku triggered Broly. Not because of the crying or Goku being the main character. But because of Saiyan instinct and Saiyan society.
Broly was born with a vast power level that fluctuated with his moods. Usually, he’d be treated as an Elite.
But because King Vegeta, our Vegeta’s father, decided to kill Broly to rid himself of a possible threat. Broly and his father soon find themselves being left to die, but not before the crying scene.
Saiyan babies aren’t that different from human babies. They can’t fight, and they can only communicate through limited means.
Goku could sense Broly’s power level but refused to be cowed by it. So, he did the only thing he could do.
He cried in defiance, and Broly cried because of this. Unfortunately, we can’t see into every crib in the nursery.
But we know Broly and Goku weren’t the only babies in the room. Yet we only hear these two cry.
Of course, that doesn’t explain why Broly would remember that Goku was that baby. And we probably will never get a good explanation.
But do yourselves a favor and look up the fights between Broly and the Z Fighters in the Legendary Super Saiyan movie. Listen to how Broly talks to them, and look at what he’s doing.
If Broly can make Vegeta give up before the fight starts and without touching him. What could Broly have done against Frieza or Perfect Cell?
