On November 4, 2022, @Revenger_anime posted a new PV trailer of Raizo Kurima from Revenger on Twitter and YouTube. Details about the anime-only show have been steadily trickling in.
We have the leading roles confirmed, a full synopsis, and a release date, and the official website continue to grow. But many questions remain, and the PV doesn’t answer them.
Who is Raizo Kurima?
Raizo Kurima is a survivor of when the Satsuma Clan attacked his village when he was a child. As a result, he’s quiet and sincere as he lives as a samurai.
He’s a master swordsman who can kill with a single slash, but he can be manipulated. Unfortunately, we don’t have any information on who trained him, but it’s been hinted that he was betrayed by someone close to him.
The PV Trailer is only 20 seconds and doesn’t show us much. Much of it was covered in previous trailers, but we see an interaction between Raizo and Soji.
We don’t know if romance will appear in Revenger between our main characters, but a bond will form between them. Unfortunately, the store won’t run itself, and sadly, there are a lot of people who need revenge.
Why being a samurai is a double-edged sword.
If you enjoy watching historical anime or anything involving swords, you may have encountered samurai and bushido in two different lights. Either as noble, righteous warriors serving a daimyo and the people to uphold justice.
Or someone a little better than a bandit who’s drunk on power. Sadly, both of them are correct.
History has a way of romanticizing the past and only focusing on specific aspects or moments. Samurai are no exception, especially if you prefer ninjas!
As for why Raizo is at a disadvantage, given he will join the Revenger team, it’s safe to say he has an honor code, but we’ll have to wait and see what it entails. Samurai did have the right to kill whoever they wanted, as long as they were of lower status in certain situations.
But that also plays into the mission of Revenger. They are taking revenge for people without power.
So what happens if they go up against a samurai claiming the right of Kiri-sute gomen? Will Raizo cut down a samurai for the sake of a job, or will he follow the code of samurai?
