The Muv-Luv Alternative universe at a glance
The Muv-Luv Alternative anime is based on the eponymous romance visual novel, which is just an installment of a far more prolific series. In actual fact, the Muv-Luv franchise numbers five titles, as follows:
- Muv-Luv Extra and Muv-Luv Unlimited
- Muv-Luv Alternative
- Muv-Luv Photonflowers
- Muv-Luv Photonmelodies
- Muv-Luv Unlimited: The Day After
The Muv-Luv Alternative visual novel (2006) is a sequel to Muv-Luv Extra (2003) and Muv-Luv Unlimited (2003) and is set in an alternate Earth in which mankind is facing extinction by BETA, a superior alien race. Humanity is using humanoid fighting machines known as Tactical Surface Fighters.
Both Muv-Luv Extra and Muv-Luv Unlimited received a PC release via Steam, in 2016 and 2017, respectively. The games are often listed among the finest visual novels to date.
The Muv-Luv games follow Takeru Shirogane (the playable character of the series), who wakes up one day to find a woman sleeping in his bed. The lady — coincidentally, an heiress of a powerful family — is named Meiya Mitsurugi and is dead set on marrying Takeru.
Romance visual novels being romance visual novels, things won’t be easy for Meiya because Takeru’s childhood friend Sumika Kagami has similar intentions.
As if things weren’t complicated enough for Takeru, he just so happens to discover his hometown of Yokohama in ruins, with a mysterious mecha collapsed on Sumika’s house. The confused PC soon realizes that he’s been teleported to another world where mankind is fighting BETAs.
All of the Muv-Luv games were developed by âge. The trilogy (Muv-Luv Extra, Muv-Luv Unlimited, and Muv-Luv Alternative) starts as a romance story (Extra), resumes as an alternate Earth story (Unlimited), and finally becomes a war epic (Alternative).
