Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Timeline
Initially announced in June 2020, the Netflix Original anime series has seen some ups and downs since. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a spin-off of the video game Cyberpunk 2077 by CD Projekt Red, which went through hell following the game launch.
Allegedly, the developer had to pay the investors $1.85 million after they’d filed a class-action lawsuit claiming that CD Projekt Red misled them in view of the game’s technical performance on PS4 and Xbox One.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Plot
Not much has been disclosed on the matter. What we know so far is that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has a separate story from Cyberpunk 2077’s plot. Nevertheless, the story takes place in Night City.
As customary with cyberpunk plots, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners follows a kid trying to survive in Night City, choosing to become an Edgerunner (a mercenary outlaw).
For those who haven’t played the video game and the RPG, here’s a glimpse at the setting:
The Free City of Night City (often abbreviated to Night City) is an autonomous city located between Los Angeles and San Francisco. It is a multicultural metropolis of the 21st century that is drowning in corruption and organized crime, with gangs running rampant.
Night City is a city-state (Free City) run by the Arasaka Corporation. It was originally established in 1994 by Richard Night as Coronado City (it was renamed to Night City in 1998).
As time went by, Night City went from being “The City of Dreams” to “The City on the Edge of Tomorrow” to “The Worst place to live in America.” In 2077, when the story takes place, the latter is the city’s attribute.
From Cyberpunk 2020 to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
Cyberpunk 2077 is the official video game adaption of Mike Pondsmith’s tabletop RPG Cyberpunk (first published in 1988 by R. Talsorian Games). The RPG system was renamed Cyberpunk 2020 (second edition) and Cyberpunk Red (fourth edition) as to be distinguishable from the cyberpunk genre it draws on.
In a similar fashion, the game was originally titled Cyberpunk, with the 2077 attribute being added in 2012.
Cyberpunk 2020 is greatly influenced by the novels of Phillip K. Dick and William Gibson and, particularly, by Blade Runner (1982), which is to say: it is a dystopian alternate future setting. No less is to be expected from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which, judging by what little we have seen has strong Akira vibes (a sneak peek below).
Stay tuned for Geeked Week 2022!
