The SPY x FAMILY Season 2 release date is confirmed for Saturday, October 7, 2023 (Fall 2023), at 8:30 a.m. PST (11:30 a.m. EST) on Crunchyroll.
SPYxFAMILY Season 2 is listed with a total of 12 episodes across three Blu-ray & DVD volumes.
The 2nd season is joined by a SPY x FAMILY movie. The dual announcement of both projects was made during Jump Festa 2023 on December 18, 2022.
The movie title is SPY x FAMILY CODE: White. It’s scheduled to release on December 22, 2023.
The SPY x FAMILY Season 2 anime TV series will have Anya, Yor, and Loid Forger returning for more rom-com spy action where Yor’s assassin work takes her onto a cruise ship with her family. Will Yor be able to hide the truth from her family?
Yes, that means the SPY x FAMILY: Great Cruise Adventure Arc (Cruise Daibouken) will not be adapted as the 2023 SPY x FAMILY movie. Instead, the new film will be a completely original story produced under the supervision of SPY x FAMILY manga creator Tatsuya Endo!
Both SPY x FAMILY Season 2 and a movie were announced during Jump Festa 2023, which took place in Japan on the morning of December 18, 2022 (the North American evening of December 17, 2022).
In the past, Anime Geek successfully predicted that the exact SPY x FAMILY Season 2 release date would be in Fall 2023. Based on the story pacing of the manga series it’s also predicted that the 2nd season will have a single cour or 1 part. (Please see the release date predictions section below for more details.)
Based on the release schedule for the Blu-Ray/DVD box sets, the SPY x FAMILY Part 2 release date was known ahead of time to be during the Fall 2022 anime season.
Starting with SPY x FAMILY Episode 13, SPYxFAMILY Part 2 has 13 episodes in total. That means SPY x FAMILY Part 2 was a split-cour anime series.
What’s a “cour,” you might ask? For those unfamiliar with the lingo, a “cour” is a three-month block of TV broadcasting based on the physical seasons usually composed of 10 to 13 episodes.
A “split-cour” is where a single anime season takes a multi-month break before resuming TV broadcasting.
Once a rarity, this type of TV broadcasting schedule has become fairly common in the anime industry, especially since the COVID pandemic disrupted several years’ worth of production scheduling. Recent examples include Attack On Titan Season 4 Part 3 and Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Part 2 (the actual Mushoku Tensei Season 2 anime is confirmed to be in production).
The mid-season finale, SPY x FAMILY Episode 12, was released on June 25, 2022. The first season’s finale, SPY x FAMILY Episode 25 (SPY x FAMILY Part 2 Episode 13), was released on December 24, 2022.
SPY x FAMILY Blu-Ray/DVD Volumes 1 through 3 includes Episodes 1 through 12 and will be released on July 20, 2022, September 21, 2022, and November 16, 2022. But then there is a time gap before Volumes 4 through 6 are released on January 18, 2023, March 15, 2023, and May 17, 2023.

This article provides everything that is known about SPY x FAMILY Season 2 (SPYxFAMILY Season 2) and all related news. As such, this article will be updated over time with news, rumors, and analysis. Meanwhile, let’s delve down into what is known for certain.
SPYxFAMILY Season 2 release date predictions: Why Fall 2023 is likely
As of the last update, Studio CloverWorks, WIT Studio, Shueisha Productions, producer Toho animation, or any company related to the production of the anime has not officially confirmed the exact SPY x FAMILY Season 2 release date in 2023. However, the 2nd season was announced at Jump Festa 2023.
Once the news is officially confirmed this article will be updated with the relevant information.
In the meantime, it’s possible to speculate about when the SPYxFAMILY Season 2 release date will occur in the future.
The SPY x FAMILY reviews were through the ceiling from Episode 1. Within days, the first season managed to reach the Top 10 most popular anime of all time on MyAnimeList.
It was so popular that some anime fans even began generating controversy by demanding that the studios have SPY x FAMILY “cancelled” over certain anime scenes allegedly “sexualizing” Any Forger. When an artist created fan art of a Black Any, Loid, and Yor that caused another SPY x FAMILY controversy.
In Japan, the SPY x ANIME anime was popular enough that a SPY x FAMILY musical and a second SPY x FAMILY cafe event were almost immediately announced. The SPY x FAMILY Episode 1 premiere had a 3.1% rating, which means that an estimated 3.1% of all Japanese households watched the premiere.
That’s comparable to the weekly One Piece episodes’ average of 3.0 to 4.0% and better than the 2.4% rating of Attack On Titan: The Final Season and Lupin III Part 6 at 2.9%. But it’s not quite super popular since Demon Slayer Season 2 Episode 1 had a 10% rating (although, by Episode 4 the Mugen Train Arc TV show was down to 4%).
Similarly, the SPY x FAMILY anime’s first season was almost always in the Top 3 on Crunchyroll’s popular anime list during Spring 2022 and Fall 2022. So it’s not like the Golden Kamuy anime, which was popular enough inside Japan to be greenlit for Golden Kamuy Season 4 but still had trouble getting traction internationally.
According to Oricon, the SPY x FAMILY Blu-Ray box set sold 8,085 copies in its first 5 days. By comparison, the My Hero Academia Season 5 Blu-Ray/DVD Volume 1 sold 1,912 copies during its debut in 2021. Attack on Titan: The Final Season Volume 1 sold 3,108 copies in total in its first week. (BD: 2652 / DVD: 456). Also, keep in mind that an anime TV show is considered successful if it surpasses 3,000 copies in its first week, although BD sales have long since been surpassed by streaming revenue as a metric for measuring financial success.
Another major factor was the boost to SPY x FAMILY manga sales in Japan. The series was already popular before the anime premiered in Spring 2022.
By November 2021, the Spy x Family manga had exceeded 12.5 million copies in circulation. To put 12.5 million copies in perspective, the Jujutsu Kaisen manga did not reach 12 million copies until the end of November 2020, which was almost two months after the Jujutsu Kaisen anime premiered.
A month before the Tokyo Revengers anime premiered in Spring 2021, its respective manga was only up to 8.5 million copies in circulation. The anime boost caused the Tokyo Revengers manga to reach 50 million copies by January 2022 and the Tokyo Revengers Season 2 anime was already announced.
It seems very likely that the SPY x FAMILY manga circulation will receive a similar boost, which is a big deal since manga publisher Shueisha is directly on the anime production committee. Shortly after the SPY x FAMILY Episode 1 premiere, the manga topped 16 million copies. The manga began selling around half a million copies per week in Japan and the series already exceeded 17 million copies by the end of April 2022, with 2,303,434 copies sold in the month.
In the final week of April 2022, SPY x FAMILY sold 550,527 according to the Oricon manga weekly rankings. That meant the SPY x FAMILY manga was outselling Tokyo Revengers, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Golden Kamuy combined (485,106 copies)!
On May 9, 2022, the editor of the SPY x FAMILY manga announced via Twitter that the series had exceeded 18 million copies in circulation! A new reprint of manga Volume 1 would include a wraparound band announcing this achievement. On May 29, 2022, the same editor announced that circulation had surpassed 21 million copies, which means that an incredible 8.5 million copies were added in just two months’ time. By August 28, 2022, the manga circulation had jumped up to 25 million copies.
The day that SPY x FAMILY Season 2 was confirmed to be in production, December 18, 2022, the manga circulation for Volumes 1 through 10 had reached 29 million copies.
For all these reasons, it was always very likely that the anime production committee would have SPY x FAMILY renewed for a second season. The only issue is how soon pre-production begins since anime industry studios are booked up for the next several years. But this is almost a special case since the manga was very popular well before the anime premiered so the producers knew they had a definite hit on their hands.
As noted above, the producers of SPY x FAMILY also produced Attack On Titan. Despite the amazing success of AoT Season 1 (the first week of Blu-Ray/DVD sales sold 56,793 copies), they let that series linger for four years which potentially squandered some of its profit potential (Season 2 sold 6,603 BD/DVD copies in its first week in 2017). Considering that they already have the SPY x FAMILY manga’s success to gauge the potential popularity of the anime it was easy to predict that they would not make that mistake again.
Since the production is scheduled out in advance in 2022 by TOHO Animation, it’s possible that the SPY x FAMILY Season 2 release will be after the movie. Assuming that the SPY x FAMILY movie release date is in Summer 2023 then the SPY x FAMILY Season 2 release date would be in Fall 2023.
Pushing the 2nd season to the end of 2023 would also give mangaka Endo more time to produce enough chapters for making SPY x FAMILY Season 2. When the first season finished in December 2022, slightly more than half of the manga chapters available at the time had already been adapted.
What’s more, if the 2nd season is a single cour that would ensure that the anime does not catch up to the source material. On that basis, the SPY x FAMILY Season 3 release date could be planned out for 2024 already since it would make sense to release new seasons on a quasi-annual basis similar to how the My Hero Academia anime adaptation is being handled.
Crunchyroll’s SPY x FAMILY Season 2 English dub release date predictions
The Spy x Family cast includes Japanese voice actor Takuya Eguchi as Loid Forger, Atsumi Tanezaki as Anya Forger, and Saori Hayami as Yor Forger.
On April 16, 2022, Crunchyroll’s SPY X FAMILY English dub was released on the anime streaming site. The SPY x FAMILY dub actually premiered a day early on Crunchyroll’s Twitch channel at 4:00 PM EST on April 15, 2022, so it’s possible something similar could happen for the second season.
Alex Organ is voicing Twilight aka Loid Forger. He’s known for playing Aizawa in My Hero Academia Season 6.
Natalie Van Sistine is voicing Yor Forger. She’s known for playing Reona in Full Dive: The Ultimate Next-Gen Full Dive RPG Is Even S**ttier than Real Life!
Megan Shipman is voicing Anya Forger. She played Akebi in the 2022 Akebi’s Sailor Uniform anime.
Anthony Bowling is voicing Franky. He also voiced Alciel (Shirō Ashiya) in The Devil is a Part-Timer! Season 2 in 2022 and The Devil is a Part-Timer! Season 3 in 2023.
Additional cast:
- Caitlin Glass as Damian Desmond
- Dani Chambers as Becky Blackbell
- Macy Anne Johnson as Emile Elman
- Michelle Rojas as Ewen Egeberg
Presumably, Crunchyroll’s SPY X FAMILY Season 2 English dub release date will be announced in the month of the second season’s premiere. In the best-case scenario, it could be a SimulDub where the dubbed version is not behind by a week. Assuming that the anime premieres in Fall 2023, that would be mid-to-late October 2023.
SPYxFAMILY Season 2 anime TV spoilers (plot summary)
Operation Strix has finally resulted in Loid making contact with his target. But there’s a long way to go.
Loid is shocked when Franky informs him that a special contact has been eliminated by a shadow organization called Garden. Loid thought the group was just an urban legend, but Franky explains that traitors within Ostania are assassinated by Garden’s elite soldiers that are powerful enough to wipe out a military unit all on their own.
That day, Yor helps Franky with a missing cat problem that quickly escalates into powered exoskeleton suit hijinks. But Yor’s good day ends when she picks up the phone and a new client has called for the Thorn Princess.
Yor receives a mission to protect Olka Gretcher and her son from a group of skilled assassins aboard the Princess Lorelei cruise ship. These clients are part of a mafia family and they will be traveling incognito with Olka taking the name Shaty Grey as the wife of Furseal Grey.
Yor’s mission isn’t so simple since Loid and Anya are also aboard the cruise ship thanks to winning prize tickets in a giveaway. In addition to protecting the mafia clients, Yor must also protect her secret identity from being discovered by her own family, which has her doubting her double life as an assassin.
Unfortunately, anime fans will have to wait until the SPY x FAMILY Season 2 release date to watch what happens next. Stay tuned!
SPY x FAMILY manga compared to the anime’s first season
The story for the anime TV show is based on the SPY x FAMILY manga series by creator Tatuysa Endo. The mangaka started his career as an assistant for Blue Exorcist before he began creating various one-shot manga stories with editor Shihei Lin.
When creating the initial concept, the working title was written out in Japanese as スパイ・ファミリー. The editor and mangaka decided to make the official title in English and the cross or X between the title was influenced by Hunter x Hunter. Unlike the inspiration, it’s claimed that the production team pronounces the title as simply Spy Family, with the “x” being silent.
Serialized monthly in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump Plus magazine since March 25, 2019, the series was up to SPY x FAMILY Volume 10 as of October 4, 2022. Each chapter is called a “mission” and the tankobon volumes include bonus (omake) chapters. Volume 9 ended with Chapter 61.
Publisher VIZ Media has been publishing the official SPY x FAMILY manga’s English translation in North America. The first three chapters and the three most recent chapters can be read for free on VIZ Media’s website (you have to pay for the in-between chapters). The English volumes are up to Volume 7 as of April 2022, with Volume 8 scheduled to release on September 20, 2022.
You can tell a lot of love went into the anime adaptation. It faithfully adapts the manga source material while adding little touches like the family photo and Anya going from happy to scared when Loid infiltrates Edgar’s base and she knows it’s him despite the disguise.
Some episodes incorporated anime original content that expanded on the manga’s premise without feeling like filler content.
For example, Episode 3 added Anya giving a tour of the house to Yor, which is exactly the type of thing a little girl would do in real life. (The only negative to such additions is that they distracted from the chapter’s theme of Loid bemoaning that this family will never work for his Operation Strix plan.)
Episode 5 was around 80 percent anime original. The details it added to the ball gunfight in the castle really allowed the animators to flex.
The anime even foreshadowed the coming story arcs. The drawing scene in Episode 3 seemed to tease Bond. Loid’s flashback to his childhood in Episode 1 added chilling details that didn’t begin to be filled until the latest manga Chapter 62.1 from April 2022.
However, there were some changes made to make the anime more anime-friendly. It was notable that fatal gunshots and bloody stabbings by Yor’s massacre were pushed off-screen. The moment with Loid’s shadowy face was not nearly as scary. The fan-favorite scene where Loid proposed to Yor with a grenade pin originally had flying bloody body parts in the background.
In SPY x FAMILY Part 2 Episodes 13 and 14, the anime censored moments in the Doggy Crisis Arc like the dead body of future Twilight, Handler beating up the college student, and the car explosion with the 2 agents. Handler’s kick did not shatter teeth like in the manga and the blood was censored out.
SPY x FAMILY Episode 20 also needed to censor Yor’s imagination by pixelating her assassination victims. The manga juxtaposed Anya’s face with copious amounts of blood to convey humor so the anime episode didn’t have the same impact due to the TV broadcasting rules.
Besides blood and gore being censored, SPY x FAMILY Episode 5 neglected to mention that Twilight can never get drunk. But that detail was probably omitted to prevent a backlash about Loid piloting while drinking alcohol, which is a sensitive topic in Japanese culture.
Episode 1 even edited out the vulgar thoughts of Edgar when he shot one of his own men. But such moments happened so quickly that it would have been difficult to convey in real time what Anya heard in her mind compared to being able to read at our leisure in the manga.
Similarly, there were comedic moments where Anya’s thoughts and expressions are the punchlines yet the animation didn’t pause long enough to give the humor to breathe before breathlessly marching on. The anime simply can’t match the snappy pace of the manga with its comedic timing.
Speaking of which, the adaptation pacing was also great in Part 1. Episode 1 only adapted Chapter 1 since it’s 71 pages long, which is more than double the length of the standard monthly chapter, and Episode 2 adapted Chapter 2, which is 55 pages.
Episode 3 only adapted the 27 pages of Chapter 3, so as previously mentioned the anime studio padded the story with anime original scenes. Episode 4 began to reach peak ÉLÉGANCE a more traditional adaptation pacing by adapting Chapters 4 and 5.
Interestingly enough, SPY x FAMILY Episode 12 ended the mid-season finale by only adapting bonus/omake chapters, which are called Short Missions or Extra Missions in the manga series. That meant SPY x FAMILY EP12 finished with the aquarium story
SPY x FAMILY Part 2 picked up the story again with the Bond story arc in Volume 4: Chapters 18 through 23, which is also known as the Doggy Crisis Arc.
The second half continued to combine fun side stories with the main manga chapters. The most notable addition was an anime original story/filler content for SPY x FAMILY Episode 19 that’s focused on Yor called Mama Becomes The Wind. The studio writers probably decided to do this since Yor doesn’t get the spotlight as an assassin until the SPY x FAMILY: Great Cruise Adventure Arc that will be adapted by SPY x FAMILY Season 2.
Due to all the anime original content and adapting the bonus/omake chapters the 2nd half of the first season definitely felt slower-paced. But it was the best choice in order to reach the perfect stopping point for the first season.
Here is a guide to how the remainder of the anime’s first season adapted the manga chapters:
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 5: Volume 2 – Chapter 6, anime original
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 6: Volume 2 – Chapters 7, 8
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 7: Volume 2 – Chapters 9, 10
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 8: Volume 2 – Chapter 11, Volume 3 – Chapter 12
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 9: Volume 3 – Chapters 13, 14
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 10: Short Mission 4, Volume 3 – Chapter 15
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 11: Volume 3 – Chapters 16, 17
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 12: Volume 2 – Extra Mission 1, Volume 4 -Short Mission 1
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 13: Volume 4 – Chapters 18, 19
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 14: Volume 4 – Chapters 20, 21
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 15: Volume 4 – Chapters 22, 23
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 16: Volume 5 – Chapter 24, Volume 4 – Short Mission 2
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 17: Volume 5 – Chapter 25, Volume 7 – Short Mission 5, Volume 5 Bonus
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 18: Volume 5 – Chapters 26, 27
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 19: Volume 5 – Chapter 28, Filler/Anime Original Content
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 20: Volume 5 – Chapter 29, Filler/Anime Original Content
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 21: Volume 5 – Chapters, Short Mission 3
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 22: Volume 6 – Chapters 31, 32
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 23: Volume 6 – Chapters 33, 34
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 24: Volume 6 – Chapters 35, 36
- SPY x FAMILY Episode 25: Volume 6 – Chapter 37, Volume 7 Chapter 38
All in all, as predicted the ending of the first season’s finale, SPY x FAMILY Episode 25, corresponded to Volume 7: Chapter 38.
It’s the perfect stopping point since Loid finally reaches a solid milestone in Operation Strix: making contact with his target Donovan Desmond for the first time.
Ending with Volume 7: Chapters 40, 41, 42, or 43 would have been anti-climactic since they are essentially side stories, but they would be a good start to a second season. Chapter 40 focuses on Damian and his friends visiting Stella Lake. Chapter 41 has Bond Forger going on a mission with Loid in order to avoid death by Yor’s cooking. Chapter 42 shows Yuri Briar working with SSS members whereas Chapter 43 is essentially a day in the life of Anya. Considering that these stories are self-contained they can be adapted at any point without disrupting the overall timeline.
It’s also predicted that SPY x FAMILY Season 2 will adapt the bonus Red Circus terrorist story from manga Volume 3: Extra Mission 2 (Chapter 15.1). Among manga readers, this “Butthurt Date” chapter is famous for being the one where Yor is shot in the butt! This bonus/omake chapter was probably intentionally skipped since it would make for a good action-based opening to the 2nd season while also providing necessary foreshadowing for events that won’t take place until SPY x FAMILY Chapter 69.
Some manga readers might argue that ending with the action-packed SPY x FAMILY: Great Cruise Adventure Arc would have been a better stopping point for the first season. The problem is that the pacing would be too fast since that relatively long story arc ends with Chapter 57, which would have meant skipping bonus chapters and increasing the adaptation pacing to an average of 2.5 manga chapters adapted per episode.
If anything, since much of the 15 chapters of the SPY x FAMILY: Great Cruise Adventure Arc is action panels the story arc would have been better adapted as a SPY x FAMILY movie similar to Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, although the movie runtime would have been longer than usual for an anime film. However, the producers decided to go with an original story for the film.
One major issue with SPY x FAMILY Season 2 adapting the Great Cruise Adventure Arc is that a TV series won’t be able to sidestep the censorship issues since the Cruise Daibouken story arc is quite bloody since Yor puts her assassin skills to work. As such, the TV adaptation will once again tone down the violence in order to appeal to a broader audience.
The good news is that there is plenty of source material for making SPY x FAMILY Season 2 in 2023.
As previously noted, the 2nd season probably won’t be 2 cours once again. Otherwise, the 2nd season would catch up with the manga and make the wait for SPY x FAMILY Season 3 longer.
How WIT Studio and CloverWorks split the SPY x FAMILY episodes
The first season of the SPY x FAMILY anime TV series was produced in a collaboration between Japanese animation companies WIT Studio and CloverWorks. WIT Studio established its reputation with the first three seasons of the Attack On Titan anime, but it will conclude with Studio MAPPA producing Attack On Titan Season 4 Part 3 in 2023.
In recent years, WIT Studio has produced anime originals like The Great Pretender and the adaptation of the Ranking of Kings manga (Ranking of Kings Season 2 will likely be produced in several years once manga Part 2 has enough chapters).
Studio Cloverworks is known for producing the popular My Dress-Up Darling, Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai anime, co-producing Darling in the FranXX, and the Fate/Grand Order anime series. In 2022, they also released the Akebi’s Sailor Uniform anime, Tokyo 24th Ward, In The Heart of Kunoichi Tsubaki, and the Shadows House Season 2 anime.
WIT Studio produced the odd-numbered episodes (1, 3, 5, etc) while Cloverworks was working on the even-numbered episodes (2, 4, 6, etc). Yes, that does mean WIT Studio produced the epic finale of SPY x FAMILY Episode 25.
SPY x FAMILY Season 2 studio and staff
The main staff and studio that is making SPY x FAMILY Season 2 haven’t been announced yet. In the best-case scenario, the main staff at WIT Studio and CloverWorks will return.
Tetsuya Nakatake (Attack On Titan series, Bubble movie) and Yuuichi Fukushima (The Promised Neverland) are the producers. Jouji Wada (Attack On Titan, Ranking of Kings, Vinland Saga) is the executive producer.
The first season of the Spy x Family anime project was helmed by director Kazuhiro Furuhashi. He’s most famous for directing the Hunter x Hunter anime, Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, and Dororo.
Artist Kazuaki Shimada (The Promised Neverland) was the character designer and chief animation director. Musical unit [K]NoW_NAME composed the music.
SPY x FAMILY Season 2 OP and ED music
The SPY x FAMILY Season 2 OP (opening) “Light-headed (Kurakura)” is performed by Ado, the famous songstress who played Uta in One Piece: Red. The OP was storyboarded and directed by Masaaki Yuasa:
ED (ending) theme song music “Todome no Ichigeki” is performed by Vaundy while featuring Cory Wong.

For Part 1, the SPY x FAMILY OP “Mixed Nuts (Mikkusu Natsu)” was performed by Official HIGE DANdism, while the SPY x FAMILY ED “Comedy (Kigeki)” was performed by Gen Hoshino.
The SPY x FAMILY Part 2 OP “Souvenir” was performed by Bump of Chicken.
Let’s just hope that the wait for the SPY x FAMILY Season 2 release date isn’t too long. Stay tuned!
