Coming this summer, the Black Summoner anime follows a young man who enters an isekai world only to learn that he’s made a deal with a powerful being. In exchange for his memories, he’s given the powerful gift of summoning. However, he needs to level up if he’s to make use of his skills. And along the way, there are many foes who’d want nothing more to be rid of a potential threat.
The series is set to air in July 2022 — coinciding with the release of the English edition of the Black Summoner Volume 9 light novel.
Back when the Black Summoner anime was first announced, fans received information about the main voice cast including Kouki Uchiyama (My Hero Academia’s Tomura Shigaraki) as the main protagonist Kelvin. But since then, the production team has announced three additional members who will follow alongside Kelvin in his adventures.
- Kouki Uchiyama as Kelvin
- Reina Ueda as Melfina
- Yousuke Akimoto as Gerard
- Landi as Clotho
- Manaka Iwami as Efil
- Minori Suzuki as Sera
The studio producing the anime, Satelight, is no stranger to isekai series. Fall 2013’s Log Horizon introduced many to the genre, and it’s likely that Black Summoner will do the same for newcomers joining the anime fandom in the future. With a plot that’s fun and straight-forward, Kuro no Shoukanshi is a good pick for those wanting to dabble into the isekai genre without needing much precursor knowledge of MMORPGs.
Where can I learn more about the Black Summoner anime?
Recently, the cast of Black Summoner was at AnimeJapan 2022 to discuss their thoughts on the series and get fans stoked for what’s to come. It’s worth watching the voice cast face-off in a game of charades, and it speaks to the sense of comradery they were able to form while working together on the Summer 2022 anime.
Want to enter to win an autographed illustration by Clotho voice actress Landi? Follow the official Kuro no Shoukanshi twitter and retweet this post. Two lucky participants will win! But fans only have until April 13th to enter so don’t wait too long. Black Summoner’s official Twitter is also a great place to stay up-to-date with new information about the series so it’s win-win even if you don’t… win.
There’s also, of course, the light novel and manga that will catch you up-to-speed with the series’ plot and characters. As of now, it’s most likely that the Black Summoner anime will be a faithful adaptation. But until the series airs, there’s no way to know for certain if the anime will take any creative liberties. For now, fans can only wait and see!
What other anime is releasing in the Summer 2022 anime season?
Alongside Black Summoner, fans have new series and continuations alike to get excited about! Those looking for something in the same vein as Kuro no Shoukanshi should also check out My Isekai Life (Tensei Kenja no Isekai Life: Daini no Shokugyo wo Ete, Sekai Saikyou ni Narimashita) which similarly follows a protagonist who collects new companions to aid him in his adventures.
There’s also the fourth season of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? that leans further in the direction of romance. And those more interested in the worldbuilding elements of fantasy should check out Overlord Season 4 which also is releasing this summer.
For those wanting a darker seinen series, Made in Abyss Season 2 — while not an isekai — is a wonderful fantasy adventure that pushes its delightful cast to their limits. And for something more lighthearted and comedic, there’s also Isekai Ojisan which explores the hilarious antics of a man who returns to the real world after some… less-than-heroic adventures in a world beyond.
No matter what you’re looking for, the Summer 2022 anime season is packed with gems to check out. If you’re already excited for Black Summoner, there’s an endless stream of content on its way in the next coming months.
