At AnimeJapan 2022, Aniplex put out a new trailer for the second season of Shadows House, set to premiere in July of this year. The series follows Emily, a girl brought into the mysterious shadow house to act as a face for Kate, a girl cloaked in soot that is one of the nobles of the house. Together, they work to unravel the secrets of the Shadows House to discover what’s really going on behind the scenes.
This second season comes about a year and some change after the first season’s success.

What is the plot of season 2?
Strangely enough, no details regarding the plot of season 2 of Shadows House have been made public yet on the website besides the returning cast for the series and the ominous phrase, “This house still has plenty of secrets within it,” suggesting that not everything’s been found out about the house just yet. This is a bit strange, considering the ending of the first season.

As discussed in a previous article, after the first nine episodes of Shadows House, the show went pretty anime-original and took elements from later on in the manga, then incorporated them into the overall fabric of the show leading to a few significant departures from the source material. The most notable example of this is the fairly early reveal of Grandfather’s plan for the house and the true identity of the Shadows as morphlings.
This leads to a pretty significant question: will the studio behind the adaptation choose to backtrack and go back to covering manga material with a bit of patchwork between the two seasons made to retain the plot, or will they choose to go full anime-original in the vein of Fullmetal Alchemist back in the day?
From the teaser trailer, it’s clear that the arc that they’re covering does include some manga-only material, suggesting the first path. It’ll be interesting to see if they keep on with the slight differences, or if they go straight back to covering the manga material 1:1.
